Robert J. Sawyer, a Canadian sci-fi writer known for his novel Flashforward (the basis for the television series of the same name), has written a Hugo award-nominated novel, WWW: Wake, intended as the first novel in a trilogy. The novel follows fifteen year-old Caitlin Decter, blind since birth, as she receives an implant to her optic nerve designed to give her sight for the first time. WWW: Wake is a very good read but with so many open ends it does feel like the introduction to a much larger story. I guess the wait for the second part in the trilogy, WWW: Watch, begins. In Wake, it's an annoying intrusion, interrupting the main story for an apparently pointless side-story that never goes anywhere. This is an immensely frustrating book.
